Helping Orphans in Haiti - Guest Post by Jonas Dorsett

During the week of July 4, 2012, I traveled to Haiti with 15 other people from my church. We served at an orphanage called God’s Littlest Angels. This is one of the most respected orphanages in Haiti and specializes in caring for pre-mature infants. But they do not just house babies; they care for children up to 12 years of age. Though they normally house 80 orphans at a time, due to the turmoil that has wracked Haiti since the 2010 earthquake, the number of orphans they serve has swelled to over 140 and it appears that it will remain that way indefinitely.

The overcrowded conditions have forced the orphanage to spread out to three different locations across the city. This is a logistical nightmare. The leadership at the orphanage was able to purchase a large parcel of land about 20 minutes away. They are building a new facility there and when it is finished, all the children and staff will be able to be together again in one place.

My role for the summer will be two-fold. I will help do physical work on the construction of the new buildings. I will also spend time interacting with the orphans, especially the older boys who are looking for adult role models. I will spend 74 days in Haiti. I would like to ask you and your church to pray for me each day while I am away. Living and serving in Haiti is a real challenge due to the extreme poverty and poor living conditions. But as you pray, I know the Lord will give me the strength to serve effectively.

I also must raise $3,700 to cover the cost of my food, lodging, in country transportation and airfare. Though this is a great deal of money, it is impossible to put a price tag on the life of an orphan. This works out to only $50 a day. I am looking for individuals, mission groups, churches or other organizations to sponsor one or more days. If the Lord should lead you to make a tax deductible donation for this mission effort, checks may be sent to the Next Generation Evangelistic Network, 624 Higuera Road, Barre, VT, 05641. Please write “Haiti Mission Project” on the check’s memo line. Donations may also be made by credit card by clicking on the donate button below.
